According to WHO, it is important that for any product to be classified as a probiotic, it must be or must contain live microorganisms which are resistant to gastric acid by juice pancreatic juices and reach the intestine in number sufficient to elicit a beneficial effect. It should be scientifically validated through well controlled clinical trials.
Excessive use of antibiotics may kill the good bacteria present in the digestive tract, probiotics can help replace them.
Finding alternative to antibiotics has become a global issue as the demand for food increases to meet the nutritional needs of an ever growing population.
The WHO has raised concern regarding ABR and warned of the prospect of a post antibiotic era in the 21st century where even a routine infection and a minor injury may kill due to ineffectiveness of antibiotics. Hence, turning to probiotic solutions to boost the immune system seems a beneficial alternative.
Some bacteria classified as probiotics are:
1. Lactobacillus - found in yoghurt and fermented food.
2. Bifidobacterium - health is the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and other conditions.
3. Saccharomyces boulardii - a type of yeast that helps fight diarrhoea and other digestive problems.
Many factors like - illness, medication, diet, aging may lead to microbial imbalance in the body and may further lead to -: childhood diarrhoea, antibiotic associated diarrhoea, infectious diarrhoea, ulcerative colitis, weak immune system, Crohn's disease, inflammatory prostrate.
Unhealthy gut/prostate me also be the reason behind dermatological conditions such as breakouts, clogged pores, oily skin, and premature hair fall etc.
Lack of pro and pre biotics in the body might hamper the absorption of vitamin K ( body needs vitamin K to produce prothrombin, a protein and clotting factor that is important in blood clothing and bone metabolism - there are considerable experimental data demonstrating its potential anticancer activity in several cancer types including prostate cancer), as they play a significant role in the metabolism of vitamins.
These probiotics are found naturally and even prepared artificially. Natural sources may include yoghurt, chocolate algae, fermaented food, lactobacillus bulgaris; Yakult is an artificial source of probiotic.
Yakult: it is a probiotic drink that helps improve intestinal functions and build immunity. Containing about 6.5 billion beneficial bacterias. Available both in liquid as well as capsule form.
Researchers have found numerous evidences that have shown that changed gut microbiota is associated with several disorders including prostrate or rectal cancer. Thus, probiotics have recently become the focus of medical researchers due to their anticancer properties; they are also known to be beneficial in Cancer stem cell maintenance.
In the fast pacing 21st century, food alone is unable to meet all the nutritional needs of the body and hence supplementation has become essential.
It is further known that probiotics, prebiotics and simbiotic improve lipid profile and glycemia control by selectively supporting the health promoting gut bacteria.
