1. Operation Cactus

Took place in 1988: code name of intervention of Indian armed forces to disable the attempted coup of the Maldivian group led by Adullah Luthuji to overthrow the Gayoom government in Male.

The group was aided by armed mercenaries of the people's Liberation Organization of Tamil Eelam (PLOTE) a Sri Lankan Tamil Secessionsit organisation .

Code name for Indian army military action carried out between 1st June-8th June 1984 to remove militant religious leader Bhinderwale and his followers from the buildings of the Harmandir Sahib (Golden Temple) in Amritsar, Punjab.

Root of the operation Blue star can be traced back to the Khalistan Movement, a political Sikh nationalist movement that wanted to create an independent state for the Sikh.

Operation Blue star had 2 operations;

(a) Operation Metal

(confined to the Golden Temple)

(b) Operation Shop

(raided Punjab country side )

Later on Operation Woodrose was carried throughout Punjab, by the Indian Army.

Assassination of Indira Gandhi by her two Sikh bodyguards:- Satwant Singh and Beant Singh was the immediate result of operation Blue Star.

This led to Anti-Sikh Riots across India; where more than 3,000 Sikhs have been reported to be killed.

It is alleged that congress leaders met the local supports and provided the with money and weapon, who used voter list and ration lists to find the location of Sikh homes and business, they were then attacked and killed.

On June 23, 1985; Air India flight 182 was blown up by a bomb in air and crashed into the Atlantic ocean. This attack is considered to be a retaliation against India for operation Blue star.

3. Operation Thunder

It took place in late 1980s to flush out the remaining Sikh activists from the Golden temple.

'Black cat' commandos of the national Security guard were used. It is known for the free access to media, unlike operation blue Star.

Operation Black Thunder was far more successful than Blue Star.
