Artificial intelligence (AI) is what the everyone talks of these days. Its catching up on youths and there have been numerous of experimentations and displays going on in robotics. AI is the intelligence that is exhibited by machines, the branch of IT dealing with creating intelligent harware machines or software applications. The term was first coined by J.McCarthy.
It is a stimulation of human intelligence process: learning, reasoning, thought process, done through computing systems. It has now surpassed the robotics phase and is a developmentation on identical theory.
Application of AI: Used in medicine by doctors as clinical expert system to diagnose patients and reduce the chances of incorrect diagnosis. Used in household activites for corporate couples and to ease day to day chores. Used by govenment in administration, legal system, detect fraud and criminal activities, enforce law and order. Used by students and researchers for education, eg; Google search engine. Interact and Understand animal behaviour. Used to cure depression and anxiety. one of its oldest and highly application is in gaming.
AI is not a new concept and has been in here for quite sometime now. The best example could be that of apple software Siri, microsoft's Cortana. The smart microwave ovens and smart phones are also build on the similar technology. The most recent newsflash is of Sophia an all funtional AI based on social humanoid robot that created quite a lot of controversies regarding the matter. AI robots are capable of learning from their mistakes and would be able to adapt to the new environment. AI is taking center stage in the field of telemedicine. The recent 3-D printing/ additive manufacturing ; in the field of medicine is giving new hope to many; rapid prototyping and manufacturing; companies like Apis Cor claims to print a house within 24 hours using this technique.
what we today have is "weak AI"- translation apps to facial recognition, algorithmic application, usage of huge data combined with self improvement- built on mathematical techniques.
What's in research phase is "strong AI" with capacity of thinking! Though this form of AI too is widely used it is still booming industry and with time
reveal astonishing inventions! It is the fourth phase of industrial revolution, that would change the lives of common man in unpredictable ways.
Despite numerous advantages and usage there has been a lot of concerns regarding AIs. in an attempt to create super intelligent machines are we beginning the destruction of entire human race? If one goes by Darwin's theory of survival of the fittest, will the AI take over the race? There have been numerous movies too on this issue; Her, A.I.S.H.A my virtual girlfriend to name a few. Being human is way more than just intelligence, it is more about living the human way, learning and acknowledging limitations, it is guided by birth death and decay- the cycle of life.
The emphasis while working on AI has been on creating an intelligent artificial being. Will it be able to retain the humane character of us. Will it being intellectually superior to us still obey us? Numerous AI equipped cars have been tested yet they have not yet been able to drive on par with man! The type of AI we have already created, mostly war-machines, aren't the dictated by profit for the companies that make them?
  All technologies come at a cost, not just economic but social and moral cost too; what future holds for us and research is yet unknown. The unknown is what creates fear, for you fear not what you see but what's unseen.
The Ministry of Defence, GOI has initiated the process of preparing Indian defence forces for the use of Artificial Intelligence. To study the issue and implications of AI a multi stakeholder on Task force was created, represented by members from the govt. , defence services, Academia, Industry professionals, DRDO, Defence PSUs, National Cyber security Coordinator, ISRO, BARC and a startup was constituted in Feb 2018. Funds are allocated for various projects on case to case basis.
In the Indian context the partnership between NITI Aayog with Google will help to improve healthcare, education, agriculture, transport, innovative governance system and improve overall economic productivity. Will give start-up India Programme and Make in India a push.
However, development in such advanced technology may affect employment sector, when India already has low level of qualified labour.
Every new development has its own pros and cons, what is to be noted is the weightage of advantage over the disadvantage and the need of hour. considering these two factors it is beyond question that AI holds expectations for the coming generation. Only time will reveal what this research hold for us.
